Origin: The idea of a small hotel with its own character, applied to homes in recent years.

The boutique hotel is a small hotel designed on purpose, with its own personality rather than a template. In a home, it turns an apartment, villa or homestay into a sequence of experience-rich rooms: an entrance with a focal point, padded headboard wall, distinctive light fittings, a small bar cabinet and a bathroom cared for like a spa. Unlike an ordinary home, which favours livable neutrality, each room here has a theme and many layers of detail.

In Vietnam, use layered lighting, upholstery, glass and stone cladding. For the humid coastal regions climate, choose moisture-resistant wall finishes, double-layer curtains to block western sun, and fabric headboards that are easy to replace. Start with one feature room before extending the idea through the house.

Common mistakes

  • Making every room so elaborate that the home is hard to live in
  • Copying a hotel layout while forgetting space for personal belongings

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Velvet and upholstery need regular vacuuming and periodic dry cleaning. Brass-toned metal should be wiped dry, as damp tarnishes it.
