Origin: 1970s–1990s, from converting old factories into lofts in New York and Europe
Industrial style comes from the 1970s–1990s conversion of old factories and warehouses in New York and European cities into lofts. Instead of hiding the structure, owners kept brick, steel beams, concrete ceilings and pipes as features. The look is bold and relaxed: concrete grey, black steel, brick red, worn leather, filament bulbs and steel-framed glazing. In Vietnam it is popular for cafés, studios and young owners; at home, a "warm industrial" version with timber, rugs and plants works best.
