Eclectic, mix and match

Mixing with intent: several styles and eras united by colour and proportion.

Origin: Eclecticism dates from the 19th century; free style-mixing became popular in the late 20th century

Eclecticism appeared in 19th-century architecture, when architects freely combined elements from different periods. In interiors today, fusion or eclectic design deliberately blends two or more styles, such as classic with modern or Indochine with Scandinavian, to create a deeply personal home. Success depends on a common thread: one palette, a repeated material or consistent proportion. In Vietnam it is ideal for families with heirlooms, altar pieces or collections, and it demands the most design experience of any style.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing without a unifying element, which looks chaotic
  • Too many styles; two or three is enough
  • Every piece competing for attention with no hierarchy
  • Ignoring scale, such as heavy antiques in a small room

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Antiques and heirloom timber are sensitive to humidity: keep them away from external walls, dehumidify in the humid season and avoid direct western sun. Light art and collections with low-UV lamps.
