Origin: A counterpoint to minimalism, rising again in the 2010s and 2020s
Maximalism goes against minimalism: deep colour, layered pattern, collections, walls covered in art and rich textiles. It is not clutter but deliberate arrangement, where different objects are linked by colour, material or theme.
In Vietnam, start with one room such as the living room or library. Choose moisture-resistant dark paint, vinyl wallcoverings, easy-wash synthetic rugs and mould-resistant fabrics. Humidity damages collections, so use closed glass cabinets, dehumidifiers and ventilation. Leave clear walkways so the room does not feel stifling. Treat walls as a gallery, repeat one or two colours across objects, and keep surfaces easy to dust and wipe.
