Origin: A resort-inspired way of designing, increasingly applied to homes in recent years.
Resort style brings the spirit of a holiday retreat into residential projects, usually villas, garden houses or homestays. Unlike an ordinary house, which puts daily convenience first, a resort puts experience first: wide verandas, deep eaves for shade, a pool or water feature, living rooms opening to the garden, and natural materials such as timber, stone and rattan. The rhythm is unhurried, with plenty of shadow and breeze.
In humid coastal areas, deep eaves and covered terraces help against western sun and driving rain; stone or textured tile floors resist slipping near the pool; outdoor timber must be moisture-treated. Tropical greenery such as areca palms, ornamental banana and coconut should be chosen to suit real light. Pay attention to running and maintenance costs of water features, which an ordinary house does not carry.
