Origin: Mid-20th century in the Nordic countries: Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland

Scandinavian design took shape in mid-20th-century Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, where long dark winters made light, pale colours, natural wood and durable craft essential, together with the cosy spirit of "hygge". Unlike minimalism it allows considered display: books, prints and cushions. In Vietnam it suits young families in apartments and townhouses on a moderate budget, adapted to the tropics with linen instead of heavy wool, sun-blocking curtains and good ventilation.

Common mistakes

  • All white and pale wood with no dark anchor, so the room looks washed out
  • Heavy wool and shaggy rugs unsuited to a hot, humid climate
  • Cheap "Nordic-look" furniture with weak legs that soon wobble
  • Too many accessories, turning cosiness into clutter

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Pale wood stains in the humid season and fades in direct sun, so use UV-resistant finishes, shade west-facing windows and dehumidify in spring. Choose linen and cotton covers that can be removed and washed.
