Origin: Thailand, from traditional raised timber houses to the modern tropical resort look
Traditional Thai architecture is a timber house raised on posts, with a steep roof, pointed gables and a broad veranda to catch breezes and shed rain and sun. Interiors favour teak, light carving, brightly coloured silk, and gilded or brass details; religious objects are treated with respect, so they should be placed with care. Modern Thai resort style is simpler, using rattan, stone and water.
Vietnam has a similar climate, so the style adapts easily. Deep verandas, high ceilings, louvred doors and ceiling fans help with ventilation. Real teak is costly and can be replaced with acacia or melaleuca timber treated against termites and stained. Silk and dyed cotton in warm tones are easy to find, but brass details should be used sparingly to avoid visual clutter.
