Origin: Tropical modernism, developed from the mid-20th century in Southeast Asia, South Asia and Brazil

Tropical modernism emerged in the mid-20th century as architects in Southeast Asia, South Asia and Brazil adapted modern design to hot, humid climates. Instead of sealing the house and relying on air conditioning, it cools itself with deep eaves, wide verandas, sun louvres, cross ventilation and planting. Interiors blur inside and out through large openings, courtyards and light wells, with timber, bamboo, rattan, stone and breeze blocks. In Vietnam it suits townhouses, villas and garden homes, provided waterproofing and drainage are done well.

Common mistakes

  • Planting without planning light and irrigation, so plants die and add damp
  • Large openings with no shading on the west side, making the house hotter
  • Non-durable timber outdoors
  • Leaf prints on every surface instead of real plants and light

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Waterproof roofs, balconies and planters thoroughly and design good drainage for the rainy season; treat timber and rattan against mould and borers. By the sea, pick salt-tolerant plants and 304 stainless fittings.
