Origin: Rooted in rural houses of Europe and North America, where local materials were used almost as found.
Rustic celebrates imperfection. Timber keeps its grain and knots, stone keeps a rough face, brick shows its fired colour and metal is allowed to darken. It grew out of rural homes where regional materials were used directly, and today it stands for warmth, honesty and closeness to nature.
In Vietnam, solid timber and natural stone are costly and easily attacked by the humid northern season, so use melamine boards with a rough wood-grain finish, wood-look tiles, brick-slip cladding and stone-effect paint for large surfaces. Keep real timber for touch points such as tabletops and handrails, and choose kiln-dried, treated wood to limit warping.
