Origin: Rooted in working farm homes of rural Europe and North America, built around practicality.
Farmhouse comes from working farm homes where the kitchen and a large table were the heart of daily life. Practicality leads: open shelving, deep sinks, long timber tables and sturdy chairs. Colours stay light, with cream, pale grey and natural wood, giving a roomy, easygoing mood.
In Vietnam it suits townhouses with generous kitchens or garden houses. Use moisture-resistant engineered cabinets with framed painted doors, white subway wall tiles and wood-look or encaustic-style floor tiles. Light colours keep the home airy in the humid season, but use anti-mould paint, and avoid large dark timber pieces in west-facing rooms, where they absorb heat.
