Origin: Developed in North American mountain regions as a way to update traditional lodges with a modern language.
Mountain modern takes the materials of mountain lodges, such as timber, stone and dark metal, and expresses them with modern lines: gently pitched roofs, big glass, simple volumes and tidy furniture. Spaces open to the landscape, so large glazing, deep porches and warm timber planes are typical. It feels solid and airy at once.
In Vietnam it suits retreat villas and garden houses in hill country, or a double-height living room. Use split stone or stone-effect tiles, composite outdoor timber, moisture-resistant wood-grain boards inside and black aluminium frames. Hill areas see fog, rain and damp, so deep eaves, careful waterproofing, roof insulation and ventilation are needed to avoid mould.
