Origin: Formed in the arid American southwest, combining adobe-inspired architecture with modern aesthetics.
Desert modern draws on the arid American southwest: smooth earth-toned plaster walls, soft arches, simple volumes, raw wood and cactus or succulents. Colours are terracotta, sand and clay pink, giving a warm, dry, airy feel. Furniture often has gentle curves and handcrafted materials.
In Vietnam the humid northern climate is unlike a desert, so adjust: use plaster-effect or terracotta paint with moisture resistance instead of real earthen plaster, terracotta or terracotta-look tiles, rattan, bamboo and ceramics. Arched openings suit façades, corridors and doorways. Succulents should sit in sunny, ventilated places and away from prolonged damp.
