Origin: The Alps, Europe, the traditional mountain timber house of regions such as Switzerland, Austria and France
The chalet is the timber house of the Alps, with a low, wide-spreading roof to carry snow, timber balconies and deep eaves. Inside are timber boards on walls and ceilings, exposed beams, a stone or brick fireplace, heavy timber furniture, wool throws, faux fur and thick bedding. Warm light and rough natural surfaces give a cosy feel.
In Vietnam it fits mountain retreats such as Sa Pa, Tam Đảo and Mộc Châu and the cooler regions of the north. Pine or jointed timber treated against termites, stone at the base of the walls and an electric log-effect fire can be used. On the humid plains, avoid cladding too much with timber; use a measured amount with ventilation to prevent mould, and provide deep eaves for summer shade.
