Origin: Emerged in the late 20th century and grew with concern over climate change and urbanisation; in Vietnam a clear trend in recent years.
Green architecture aims at environmentally friendly buildings: using natural light and breeze, local materials, saving energy and water, and bringing plants onto façades, roof terraces and balconies. In Vietnam, the townhouse with a plant-covered front and a skylight is a familiar image.
In the north choose suitable plants: sun- and wind-tolerant, unlikely to fall in storms, with irrigation, drainage and waterproofed planters. Orientation, overhangs and louvres reduce west heat. In salty humid coastal regions choose salt-tolerant species. Solar panels and rainwater harvesting can be added, but weigh real cost and benefit and do not do it merely for show.
