Origin: Took shape in Vietnam under French rule from the late 19th to mid 20th century, visible in many cities.
The French colonial villa draws on 19th- and early 20th-century French architecture, adapted for the tropics. It is marked by a symmetrical plan, thick walls, tall shuttered windows, wrought-iron balconies, a pitched tiled or mansard roof and mouldings around openings.
Building one today needs correct proportions and precise detail, so an experienced designer matters. In humid coastal regions allow for salt-laden humidity and typhoon winds: waterproof renders, durable exterior paint, precast concrete or GRC mouldings, and powder-coated steel or cast-iron railings. The roof needs good drainage and insulation for attic rooms.
