Origin: Bamboo is a traditional Vietnamese material; modern bamboo architecture has grown strongly since the 2000s with many experimental works.
Bamboo architecture uses bamboo for structure and finishes, from frame and roof to walls and floors. Bamboo grows fast, is light, flexible and strong in tension, suiting small and medium buildings such as retreats, cafes, community halls and garden houses.
Bamboo is prone to termites, fungus and rot in damp, so it must be preservative-treated, detailed to stay off wet ground, and sheltered by deep eaves. In humid coastal regions with damp, sea salt and storms, joints must be firm, inspections regular and fire safety planned. Bamboo suits small or resort buildings; it is not always right for large long-term homes without good maintenance.
