Origin: Emerged in the late 1980s and was introduced widely through the 1988 deconstructivist architecture exhibition at MoMA

Deconstructivism appeared in the late 1980s and reached the public through the 1988 MoMA exhibition. It fragments, offsets and overlaps volumes to disrupt familiar order. Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Peter Eisenman and Daniel Libeskind are often discussed alongside it.

In Vietnam, apply it to a façade or one key feature such as a slanted ceiling, a zig-zag stair or a glass box that cantilevers out. It needs a structural engineer and careful waterproofing because skewed angles hold rainwater. Use aluminium panels, glass and waterproofed concrete; overhangs and louvres help reduce west-facing heat.

Common mistakes

  • Offsetting forms without structural and drainage design, risking leaks
  • Applying it to the whole house, which makes furniture hard to use and costly

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Joints at skewed angles need waterproofing and a check after the rainy and humid seasons; clean glass and aluminium panels regularly to prevent staining.
