Origin: Safari lodges and tents in East and Southern Africa, from the 20th century, now combined with local craft
Safari style draws on tents and lodges of the African savanna: earth tones, browns, beige and olive, raw timber, leather, rattan, canvas and handcrafted items such as baskets and woven rugs. Spaces are generous with high ceilings and openings to a veranda and landscape, relying mostly on natural light.
Cultural care matters: Africa is many countries and peoples, so choose crafts with a clear origin, and avoid real horn, ivory or animal skins in favour of faux alternatives. In Vietnam, reclaimed timber, synthetic rattan, canvas, woven rugs, faux leather and large plants can be used. Humidity encourages mould on leather and canvas, so choose faux leather and moisture-treated fabric; outdoors, favour synthetic rattan and termite-treated timber.
