Origin: Rajasthan, north-western India, a craft tradition of palaces and havelis over many centuries
Rajasthan is renowned for palaces, forts and havelis (merchants' houses) with inner courtyards, carved stone lattice windows (jali) and painted walls. Interiors are rich in craft: block-printed textiles, mirror embroidery, carved or painted timber furniture, brass trays and woven rugs. Colours are vivid, such as pink, orange, blue and turmeric yellow.
In Vietnam, use it at accent level to avoid visual clutter. Block-print cushions, woven rugs, pierced brass lamps, painted timber cabinets and small mirror frames can dress a living room or bedroom against white or cream walls. A timber louvre or perforated ventilation block can echo the jali, giving air and shade from western sun. Hand-printed cotton should be washed and dried in shade because colours fade in the humid season and strong sun.
