Origin: A 21st-century modern architecture trend, common in Vietnamese townhouses and garden houses.
The skillion-roof house has one roof plane sloping in a single direction, giving a bold form and modern lines. The roof is usually metal sheet, tile or panel, with a pitch of about 10 to 30 degrees. The high side allows large clerestory windows for daylight and hot-air release.
In the north, face the high side toward the west or southeast depending on the aim, and avoid exposing the tall side to afternoon sun without shading. Keep eaves moderate, especially in windy humid coastal regions, and fix firmly with rust-resistant screws. Insulation and acoustic layers under a metal roof are essential, and gutters must be large enough for heavy downpours.
