Origin: Denmark, a cultural idea of cosiness and togetherness tied to Nordic winter life

Hygge is the Danish idea of warmth, ease and togetherness with loved ones, especially through long, dark winters. In interiors it leans on soft warm light from candles and low lamps, wool throws, plump cushions, light timber, natural fabrics and a comfortable reading nook. Colours are neutral and warm, with little elaborate detail.

In Vietnam, hygge suits northern winters and damp spells: the home feels warmer with wool blankets, rugs and warm yellow light in place of cold white bulbs. Use light oak or jointed timber, cotton, linen and wool, with a few small plants. Candles and string lights create visual warmth cheaply. Limit thick rugs in overly damp rooms and choose washable fabrics so they stay clean in the humid season.

Common mistakes

  • Cold white ceiling lights that kill the cosy feel

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Choose washable fabrics, wash them regularly and dry them thoroughly in the humid season to avoid mould smell. Use a small dehumidifier in bedrooms and reading nooks.
