Origin: Europe and the United States, early to mid 19th century, inspired by ancient Greek temples.
Greek Revival grew from a fascination with ancient Greek architecture in Europe and America in the early to mid 19th century. The facade resembles a temple, with a triangular pediment, a row of columns carrying the porch roof, simple mouldings and balanced proportions. Colours are usually white or cream, giving a solemn, elegant feel.
In Vietnam it suits large villas, ancestral halls and buildings that need gravitas. In humid coastal areas, salt air and humidity fade white paint quickly, so use stain-resistant exterior paint and stone or GRC for the columns. The pediment needs careful waterproofing at the moulding base, and columns should have a reinforced concrete core tied into the structure, not hollow add-ons that peel off in storms.
