Origin: A contemporary Vietnamese architecture and interiors direction combining local materials and ways of living with modern form.
Contemporary Vietnamese is a way of designing present-day homes that respects local climate and tradition. Houses have deep eaves for shade, ventilation openings, light wells, inner courtyards and plenty of greenery. Familiar materials such as fired brick, tile, bamboo, rattan, ceramics, timber and lime plaster are used in a tidy, modern form. Interiors are unfussy, favouring comfort and ease of living.
In humid coastal regions the approach fits because it solves real problems: catching cool breezes, blocking western sun with brick or timber screens, and tackling humid spells with cross-ventilation and low-absorption materials. Ventilation blocks, stone-effect floor tiles, pressed bamboo and Bat Trang ceramics are all easy to find. The aim is a house that is both current and suited to the climate, less dependent on air conditioning.
