Origin: A seaside house style popular worldwide since the 20th century, tied to wind, sun and salt
Coastal style takes its cue from sand, waves and wind: light backgrounds, sand, blue and pale green tones, weathered timber, rattan, bamboo, linen and cotton. Spaces open to the veranda and sea, with large doors to catch breezes and few heavy pieces, prioritising a light, relaxed feel.
In Vietnam, especially in coastal and island areas, the most important factor is resistance to salt wind. Use powder-coated aluminium, 304 stainless steel, slip-resistant tile, anti-mould paint and moisture-resistant boards or timber-look composites. Synthetic rattan lasts longer outdoors than real rattan. Northern winters are cold and damp, so glazing must close tightly, while western sun calls for a deep porch or linen roman blinds.
