Origin: The traditional timber house of Hue and central Vietnam, flourishing under the Nguyen dynasty.
The rường house is the traditional timber house of Hue and central Vietnam. The frame of columns, rafters and beams is joined with mortise and tenon, without nails, and withstands storms. It usually has three or five bays, a yin-yang tile roof and a wide front veranda, set in a garden compound with a screen wall and rockery.
The rường house belongs to central Vietnam and is distinct from the northern three-bay house. If building or referencing it in the north, note that it suits rainy, stormy climates but the timber must be carefully chosen and treated against damp. In humid coastal regions set the floor high, bear columns on stone bases, add termite protection and check roof anchorage against strong coastal wind.
