Origin: Developed under the Nguyen dynasty (19th to early 20th century) in the imperial capital of Hue.
Hue imperial architecture belongs to the Nguyen dynasty, seen in palaces, temples and tombs. It features axial symmetry, decorated tiled roofs, red-lacquered and gilded timber columns, and mosaic and relief work in broken ceramic along ridges, gates and walls.
Applied to a modern home it needs restraint: borrow the spirit and a few details such as relief ridge decoration, lacquered columns, and ceramic mosaic on the gate or screen wall. In the north, relief work and lacquer suffer from damp and strong sun, so use waterproof materials and durable exterior paint. On the humid coastal regions coast allow for salt wind and storms, check roof anchorage, and avoid heavy decoration that adds load.
