Origin: Grew strongly from the early 21st century as architects reused shipping containers as homes.
The container house is built from used or new shipping containers, cut open and reinforced into living space. Benefits include fast construction because it is prefabricated, strong steel structure, and stacking and combining modules. It suits offices, homestays, cafes and small or temporary homes.
The challenges are insulation, rust and condensation. A steel shell absorbs heat, so it needs insulation and a shading or double roof above. humid coastal regions has salty air and heavy damp, so use quality anti-rust paint, treat welds and control condensation. Check the origin of used containers for chemical residue, and obtain building permission as required.
