Origin: France under Napoleon I in the early 19th century, with the architects Percier and Fontaine
The Empire style formed in France under Napoleon I in the early 19th century, with the architects Percier and Fontaine. It draws on Rome, Greece and even Egypt to express imperial power. Its marks are solid forms, controlled straight and curved lines, mahogany furniture with gilt-bronze mounts, and motifs such as eagles, bees, laurel wreaths and stars.
In Vietnam, Empire can be evoked for a living room, study or master bedroom: a sleigh-style bed, a bronze-mounted console, deep-coloured walls and draped curtains. Aim for a lean version: few motifs, quality materials. Mahogany and gilt bronze handle humidity if properly treated; avoid veneered fakes and keep a gap from external walls so damp does not collect.
