Origin: 17th–18th-century Europe, peaking with Baroque, Rococo and French royal Louis interiors

Classic European style peaked in the 17th and 18th centuries with Baroque, Rococo and the French royal interiors of Louis XIV, XV and XVI: an architecture of power and craftsmanship in which every detail is carved, gilded or hand-painted. Expect painted, coffered ceilings, columns, arches, stone fireplaces, tiered chandeliers and cabriole-legged furniture in damask and velvet. In Vietnam it needs a large, high-ceilinged villa and a very high budget; otherwise neoclassical is usually the wiser choice.

Common mistakes

  • Using it in small, low-ceilinged rooms, which feels oppressive
  • Low-quality mass-cast mouldings and carvings that look fake
  • Overfilling the room so no detail can breathe
  • Random modern pieces that break the coherence

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Dust carving and gilding with a soft brush and avoid chemicals; damask and velvet mould easily in humid weather, so keep air conditioning and dehumidifiers running. Seal marble floors and polish them periodically.
