Origin: German-speaking Europe (Germany and Austria), about 1815–1848, linked to the middle class
Biedermeier is the style of German-speaking Europe (Germany and Austria) around 1815–1848, shaped by the rise of the middle class. It simplified Empire models, dropping relief ornament but keeping clean lines, pale timbers such as cherry, pear and birch, handsome veneer, lightly curved chairs and compact proportions. It prized comfort, utility and beauty without display.
In Vietnam, Biedermeier suits apartments and townhouses because it is light and combines easily with modern pieces. Use pale, well-figured timber tables and cabinets, gently curved-leg chairs, warm walls, light fabric curtains and a small mirror. In the humid climate, choose kiln-dried timber with a semi-matt moisture-resistant finish and keep furniture off external walls; the plain spirit also makes cleaning easy.
