Origin: Rooted in 20th-century geometric painting and fashion, later spreading to interiors
Colour blocking uses solid, flat areas of colour set side by side with sharp boundaries and no gradients. The idea comes from geometric abstract painting and fashion, and in homes it creates energy and defines zones without adding partitions.
In Vietnam, keep to three or four colours at most and let one neutral cover most of the area. Use washable, moisture and mould resistant paint for the blocks so they survive the humid season. Very dark colours on west-facing walls absorb heat, so keep those lighter and use strong colours on interior walls, cabinet doors or a section of the ceiling.
