Origin: Early 20th-century Europe, from art movements that set out to break with old conventions
Avant-garde literally means "ahead of the guard": artists and designers willing to try what nobody has done before. In interiors it puts ideas above habit, with bold forms, surprising layouts, unusual materials and objects closer to sculpture than to everyday furniture.
In Vietnam it works best when applied selectively, so the home stays liveable and never feels forced. Keep the shell calm with light walls, durable floors and practical storage, and concentrate the experiment in a few places such as the living room, a corridor or the staircase. Choose materials that tolerate the humid northern winters and strong western sun, and commission pieces from drawings to control quality and cost instead of importing expensive originals.
