Origin: Inspired by Zen Buddhism and traditional Japanese aesthetics, emphasising stillness and simplicity.

Zen design draws on Zen Buddhism and traditional Japanese aesthetics. Spaces hold few objects, with open layouts, pale wood, natural fabrics, soft light and a corner of plants or pebbles. The aim is stillness that rests the mind; every object has its place and a reason to be there.

In Vietnam, Zen suits relaxation rooms, bedrooms, tea corners and dry gardens. Use engineered flooring or wood-look tiles, moisture-resistant slatted panels, cream paint, sliding glass doors and light curtains. In the humid season keep natural materials such as bamboo and sedge dry and aired, using dehumidifiers and ventilation. Gravel courts need good drainage so that water does not pool after rain.
