Seventies style, 70s vintage, 1970s interiors

Warm earth colour, soft curves and the relaxed mood of the 1970s.

Origin: The 1970s in the West, known for earth tones, large patterns and sunken conversation pits

The 1970s brought a warm, relaxed look to interiors: burnt orange, brown, mustard and avocado green; dark timber; large floral or geometric patterns; rattan, shag rugs and velvet. The sunken conversation pit is a well-known image of the era.

In Vietnam, 1970s retro suits apartments, cafés and living rooms that want warmth. Use dark-grain moisture-resistant boards, synthetic rattan, patterned cement or ceramic tiles and easy-wash synthetic rugs. Avoid deep shag rugs where damp is a problem, and use thick earth-toned curtains to block west sun. Introduce the look through two or three key pieces first, then add smaller accessories to complete the mood.

Common mistakes

  • Using every 70s colour at once, making the room look like a period set
  • Deep shag and velvet in damp areas, which can smell and go mouldy

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Natural rattan goes mouldy in damp weather, so choose synthetic rattan or air it; wash and dry rugs and cushion covers regularly.
