Origin: California, late 19th to early 20th century, recalling Spanish missions.
Mission Revival arose in California from the late 19th to early 20th century, recalling Spanish mission churches. It is recognised by curved or scalloped parapet gables, plain white stucco walls, clay tile roofs and an arched arcade. Forms are simple, with flat wall planes that play up shadow.
In Vietnam it suits villas, cafes and small hotels. In humid coastal regions large white walls grow mould easily in the damp, so choose anti-mould exterior paint and render with waterproofing admixture. Curved parapets bear wind, so they need steel reinforcement and solid ties to the structure, and roof water should drain into concealed gutters behind the parapet to avoid streaking.
