Origin: A term for a recent trend reviving traditional "grandma house" interiors for a younger generation.

Grandmillennial is a recent trend reviving traditional "grandma house" interiors: patterned wallpaper, ceramic lamp bases, embroidered tablecloths, printed upholstery and antique wooden furniture. Unlike the dated original, it uses fresher colours, modern touches and a deliberate mix of old and new.

In Vietnam it suits people with inherited pieces or a love of antiques. Use moisture-resistant wallpaper, patterned curtains, porcelain tea sets and moisture-resistant engineered wood in antique styles. Humidity makes wallpaper peel and old wood mould, so prepare walls carefully, use a dehumidifier and limit heavy fabrics in rooms with little sun.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing patterns without a dominant colour, which looks chaotic

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Waterproof walls before applying wallpaper; use a dehumidifier and wipe antique wood dry to prevent mould in the humid season.
