Origin: Developed in the first half of the 20th century in Europe; in Sweden notably through the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition
Functionalism treats form as a result of use. Homes are designed from real living needs: short circulation, enough storage, good light and ventilation, and easily maintained materials. The 1926 Frankfurt Kitchen by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky is a famous example of optimising a small kitchen.
In Vietnam this is the backbone of townhouse and small-apartment design: a sensible cooking work triangle, full-height built-ins and cross-ventilation openings. Choose moisture-proof, wipe-clean materials such as glazed tile, engineered stone, stainless steel and truly moisture-resistant boards; west faces need louvres and curtains. Beauty comes from tidiness, with no extra decoration.
