Origin: Formed in North America as a bridge between traditional and modern interiors, popular from the second half of the 20th century.

Transitional is the bridge between traditional and modern interiors. Lines are soft but lightly decorated, layouts balanced, colours neutral, materials natural and a few classical details simplified. It is a safe choice for those wanting a home that is both cosy and elegant, neither fussy nor cold.

In Vietnam, transitional suits multigenerational households, townhouses and villas. Use simple mouldings, framed wall panels, engineered wood or wood-look tile flooring and flat-framed cabinets in moisture-resistant engineered wood. Neutral colours make upkeep easy and soften west light; choose double-layer curtains and moisture-resistant materials to cope with humidity.

Common mistakes

  • Lacking personality, with everything so neutral it is bland
  • Adding ornate classical detail, which loses the simplification

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Use anti-mould paint on moulded walls; seal cabinet doors against moisture and wipe stone and wood dry in the humid season.
