Origin: The 1930s and 1940s, developed from Art Deco and inspired by the shapes of ships, trains and aircraft
Streamline Moderne developed in the 1930s and 1940s as a successor to Art Deco, simpler and with less ornament, emphasising aerodynamics. Rounded wall corners, horizontal bands, curved balconies, porthole windows and glass blocks are familiar signs, recalling ships, trains and aircraft.
In Vietnam, it suits townhouses and villas with curved façades or sweeping stairs. Use rendered walls with rounded corners and waterproof paint, glass blocks, tempered glass, and stainless steel or aluminium railings. Horizontal bands shade the building and shed rain; west faces should have deep overhangs for a cooler house.
