Origin: Europe and the United States, 18th to 19th century, reviving medieval Gothic architecture.

Gothic Revival is the revival of medieval Gothic architecture in Europe and the US from the 18th to 19th century. Its signs are pointed-arch windows and doors, steep gables, tall chimneys, lacy timber trim along the eaves, and stained or divided glass. Forms are vertical and rich in shadow.

In Vietnam it suits churches, schools, villas or restaurants that want a romantic note. In Hai Phong steep roofs shed rain very well but take strong winds, needing firm steel connections. Use GRC or aluminium for the lace trim instead of thin timber, which rots in humid weather. Pointed-arch openings need thick glass and tight gaskets against wind and driving rain.
