Red, gold, lacquer and carved timber: Chinese tradition within Saigon life.

Origin: Cholon in Ho Chi Minh City, where the long-settled Chinese community left its own architectural and interior character.

Cholon is an area of Ho Chi Minh City associated with the Chinese community, with many assembly halls, temples, shophouses and stores that carry Chinese cultural marks. In interiors, common traits are red and gold, carved timber furniture, lacquerwork, a dignified ancestral altar, Chinese-character couplets, lanterns and blue-and-white ceramics. Shophouse fronts often stand side by side, with a carefully kept space for worship inside.

When borrowing for a home, be selective and restrained: use red and gold as accents rather than covering walls, dark timber for a table set or altar, softly lit lanterns and a few chosen ceramics. In Hai Phong humid weather harms timber and lacquer, so keep rooms ventilated and wipe dry regularly. This is living culture, so approach it with respect.

Care & northern Vietnam climate

Lacquer and carved timber should avoid damp and direct sun and be wiped with a soft dry cloth. Use a dehumidifier in humid seasons to prevent mould.
