Green architecture is often associated with plant-covered façades or expensive solar systems. In reality, most of a home's environmental performance comes from basic, almost free design decisions: orientation, window placement, shading and ventilation. In Hai Phong and former Hai Duong (now part of Hai Phong city), with hot humid summers, damp "nồm" springs and cold winter winds, a well-designed house is noticeably cooler, drier and cheaper to run.
What it means for a family home
Green architecture means a home that uses less energy and fewer resources and is healthier to live in over its lifetime: less heat gain through the roof and west walls, more natural light and air, controlled humidity, and durable, low-emission materials. The measures below go from cheap and essential to optional investments.
Orientation, room layout and west-sun shading
South and south-east orientations catch summer breezes and avoid winter winds, but townhouse plots rarely let you choose. What matters is arranging rooms by sun direction:
- Put stairs, storage, bathrooms and built-in wardrobes on the west side as a buffer.
- Keep west windows small and shade them with vertical louvres, deep canopies, insulated glass or solar film.
- Use canopies on the south to block high summer sun while admitting low winter sun.
- Consider cavity walls or insulating non-fired blocks and light exterior paint on west walls.
To check feng-shui orientation as well, use our house-building age and direction checker.
Roof insulation
The top floor of a flat-roofed house is usually the hottest. Common fixes: hollow insulating tiles or XPS boards on the roof slab with waterproofing, a secondary metal or tile roof above the slab with an air gap, a planted roof terrace designed for loads and waterproofing from the start, or a pitched tiled roof with insulation and ventilation. Roof type also affects cost; compare options in the building cost estimator.
Light wells and cross-ventilation
Townhouses 15–20 m deep have dark, stuffy middles. A central light well or double-height void brings daylight down and draws hot air up; windows on opposite sides, transom vents and tilt windows keep air moving even when doors are closed.
Controlling damp
Nồm happens when warm humid air meets cool walls and floors. Waterproof foundations, wall bases, bathrooms and terraces thoroughly; fit well-sealed windows so you can close up during damp spells; raise the ground floor with a moisture barrier; prefer low-absorption tiles downstairs and mould-resistant interior paint; and use dehumidifiers or air-conditioner dry mode.
Energy, water and materials
Once design has reduced cooling demand, invest in correctly sized LED lighting on separate circuits, inverter air conditioners, solar or heat-pump water heating, rooftop solar where the roof is unshaded, rainwater collection, and low-VOC paints and low-emission engineered wood.
